The joy and the love is being smothered by legalism. It seems when times are "good" or shall I say familiar, it is easier to live for something other than ourselves. But, as soon as times get challenging we revert back to ourselves and our shells, drop the love for others and get into self-preservation mode. It seems like the tough times push some to drop the freedom of the Gospel and pick up the rules of the Law. How quickly we can change when we are living for ourselves.
